His Holiness the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa Thangka Project Fundraiser

Thank you for your interest in this project.

We are raising funds for the painting of a thangka commemorating His Holiness the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa's first

visit to the West, with highlights of his subsequent visits. This painting would celebrate His Holiness’s fulfillment of

Padmasambhava’s 8th century prophecy foretelling his visit to the Hopi Nation: When the iron bird flies and horses run on wheels, the king will come to the land of the red man."

The thangka will include the Vidyadhara Chogyam Trungpa at various events, a reminder of the enormous effort he and his students made in welcoming the Karmapa to the West in a manner befitting a king.

This proposal arose in recognition that 2024, the Year of the Wood Dragon, marks the 50th Anniversary

of the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa’s first visit to the West in September 1974. Auspiciously, 2024 also marks

the 100th year of the Karmapa's birth in 1924.

The 30X40 inch thangka, with additional brocade frame will cost $7,700.

The work will begin in the month of September. The thangka is estimated to be finished during the third week of February 2025”.
